A three hour presentation entitled Conflict Resolution: Technique & Spirit
This fast paced, informative and engaging presentation is an amalgamation of western psychology and eastern martial arts perspective relating to effective communication skills for law enforcement professionals. This interactive multimedia session is aimed at Enhanced Safety & Professionalism as well as Decreasing Complaints and Stress of class participants. Some of the principal take away points will be the Four E's of Conflict Resolution: the Energy of conflict, Ego deflation, Ethics and the central gate way to being an effective communicator, Empathy. The central goal of the class is to Generate Voluntary Compliance. Additional points presented will include: Mushin-Emotional Detachment, the Schematic of Service as well as a step by step system to aid in improving skills essential to first responders.
This program will be presented by Detective James Shanahan. He is a decorated veteran with over thirty years of experience with the New York City Police Department. He began his career and spent a decade, assigned to uniformed patrol in public housing developments. He spent many years as a police academy instructor. He served as the Senior Instructor for Special Projects for the Office of the Deputy Commissioner of Training, is a subject matter expert and has taught: Tactical communication, Critical Incident Stress Management, and Criminal Investigations to over 80,000 student ranging from cadets and recruits to in service populations, including newly promoted supervisors and executives. He is currently a member of the NYPD Detective Bureau Special Investigations Division, as well as an active member of the Hostage Negotiation Team. James is an adjunct instructor at John Jay College of Criminal Justice where he teaches a course entitled: Safe Handling of Emotionally Disturbed Persons. This course is taught exclusively to the NYPD Emergency Service Unit and the Hostage Negotiation Team. Additionally James is an accomplished stage, television and film actor, as well as a life time practitioner of traditional Japanese martial arts.
